They are unpaved, relying simply on the hard ground to provide a suitable surface for travelling on. They provide a more direct route than the modern roads we use today; modern roads tend to be located on more level, flat ground in valleys. It has been used for years by many different groups of people; travellers, farmers, and armies. During Saxon and Viking times , the Ridgeway was useful to provide a track along which to move soldiers into Wessex. In the medieval period, the route would have been utilised by drovers, moving animals to market. The Enclosure Acts of meant that the Ridgeway became more permanent and the route clearer, and it became a National Trail along with 14 others in England and Wales, in

What was the hacking trial? The scandal went to the heart of Downing Street. Among those in the dock at London’s Old Bailey for the eight-month trial were a close family friend of the prime minister and Coulson, David Cameron’s official spokesman.
Image copyright Getty Images Image caption The News of the World had almost three million readers when it closed It was some nine years ago that the News of the World published a story about Prince William’s treatment for an injury, based on information that it could only have come by because one of its journalists had listened to the prince’s voicemails. The ensuing police investigation, which uncovered “a vast number” of other victims, would begin the saga that led to the conviction of Coulson, the closure of a newspaper bought by millions every week and moves to change the way newspapers are regulated.
What is phone hacking? Phone hacking was a technique used to listen to people’s mobile voicemail. Reporters and a private investigator working for the News of the World used it to target people in the news – celebrities, politicians and crime victims – so they could find angles on stories that would get them ahead of the competition. They would listen to private messages left on voicemail, make a recording of them, and use the information to help write stories.
Why did this trial come about? The News of the World was closed down in after its owners, Rupert Murdoch’s News International, admitted the scale of hacking that had been going on, dating back many years. The company had battled against growing allegations for two years – one of its private investigators and the News of the World’s royal editor were jailed in over a story gleaned from hacking.

While some were left unimpressed with how Nissan had prioritised everyday comforts over towing ability, sales of the X-Trail rocketed. At least the second row of seats is on runners allowing you to trade legroom between rows, or on five seat models for extra boot space. The boot itself is large and on five-seat X-Trails comes with a useful false floor to divide the load space the sections can also be stood upright to create compartments , but while it beats a Mazda CX-5 for space, the aforementioned Kodiaq is still far more practical.
While quieter the petrol engine is rather gutless in the mid-range so needs to be revved. We are not exactly sure how Nissan calculated that, but do admit that the dials are indeed very easy to see, and the digital screen that sits between them serving as a trip computer is a useful touch. That said the navigation software is reliable. Our pick is the 1. What the X-Trail does feel is safe and predictable, while four-wheel-drive versions are also reasonably handy off road. The X-Trail comes with a three-year, 60, mile warranty as standard, which matches the Skoda Kodiaq and is about the minimum you should expect these days.
Renault offers a four-year warranty on its Koleos, while Hyundai provides five years on the Santa Fe and Kia seven on the Sorento. Adding four-wheel drive or an automatic gearbox will dent this figure by mpg, but the X-Trail is still competitive with rivals. Opt for the 1.

The most popular route is the Town Centre Trail, whilst the one most suited to the less energetic is the Riverside Trail. All routes start and finish at the Castle Car Park and the time taken to cover them is a matter for the individual, but as a guide the full route which starts off with an amble up the Castle Dell, alongside the Castle, takes approx. It is best to cross the road taking care due to restricted vision up the road. The first places you pass by are the Stuart Crystal workshops and historic Cromwell House the home of Riverside Pottery and Gallery, both worth a visit on your return.
Note also that there is a quiet and almost hidden little public garden a little way up from Riverside Pottery and Gallery. The garden is a feature that involved a lot of local effort to realise a design by local landscape gardener Stella Caws.
A bonus was we had good weather and met some great people.
In , it celebrated years of entrancing visitors with an awe inspiring range of stunning cave formations, the imposing cave entrance and the large passages are full of artefacts dating back millions of years along with the evidence of the significant impact of the Ice Ages. It has been featured many times on television. The tours of the Cave leave from the entrance at regular intervals with an expert guide to help interpret the many features of the Cave. The passages are floodlit with well-laid concrete paths, the usual walking or outdoor clothing will suffice and there are no steps so the Cave is accessible for pushchairs.
Dogs are allowed on leads and it is very rarely affected by flooding, in fact the wetter the weather the more spectacular the Cave! The walk from Clapham Village to the Cave is also a unique and very enjoyable experience. There is a leaflet available at the start of the Trail which interprets the features of the walk through this woodland landscape with Himalayan plantings, unusual tree species and along a wide, well maintained gravel track.
The Trail also provides access further up Clapdale beyond Ingleborough Cave to Trow Gill Gorge, a large limestone gorge carved out by glacial melt water.

View Larger Map Queensland’s best known and most used rail trail winds its way up the Blackbutt Range from the quiet little village of Linville to equally sleepy Benarkin. Beyond Benarkin, the trail is almost flat for the final short stretch into Blackbutt village. Mountain bikers should consider riding up the trail from Linville, enjoy a stop at Blackbutt and then zoom back down in half the time four to five hours altogether including time for decadent milkshakes at Blackbutt.
Your walk is straight on, but a little detour into the street will provide you with a view of some picturesque 17th and 18th century cottages.

However, also today, new polling figures show that opposition to making fox hunting legal again is at it highest ever figure — 85 per cent. The issue is that most people know that hunting is banned in Great Britain , so when they see hunts going out, the natural assumption is that they must be hunting legally. But this is where it gets murky. Prior to the Hunting Act in , there were effectively two types of hunting — lethal and non-lethal.
There are rarely incidents of animals being killed by drag hunts, and no one is trying to ban drag hunting. Instead, they invented trail hunting.
