History[ edit ] There is evidence of Neolithic settlement from burial chambers on Cotswold Edge, and there are remains of Bronze and Iron Age forts. The area still preserves numerous large, handsome Cotswold Stone “wool churches”. The affluent area in the 21st century has attracted wealthy Londoners and others who own second homes there or have chosen to retire to the Cotswolds. The name Cotswold is popularly attributed the meaning “sheep enclosure in rolling hillsides”, [8] [9] incorporating the term, wold , meaning hills. However, the English Place-Name Society has for many years accepted that the term Cotswold is derived from Codesuualt of the 12th century or other variations on this form, the etymology of which was given, ‘Cod’s-wold’, which is ‘Cod’s high open land’. Cutsdean , Codeswellan, and Codesbyrig, some of which date back to the eighth century AD. The northern and western edges of the Cotswolds are marked by steep escarpments down to the Severn valley and the Warwickshire Avon. This feature, known as the Cotswold escarpment, or sometimes the Cotswold Edge, is a result of the uplifting tilting of the limestone layer, exposing its broken edge. The dip slope is to the southeast. On the eastern boundary lies the city of Oxford and on the west is Stroud.

Royal Worcester Marks were first placed on pottery and porcelain in but it was before it became common place. Earlier Worcester Marks are rarely seen, and typically the crescent mark dates pieces to the Dr Wall period before But pieces bearing the crescent mark are rare and usually the provence of specialist collectors. In the late s Worcester were among the first to use the Bute shape for teabowls, tea cups and coffee cups.

The presence of the crescent mark dates these items to the Dr Wall period and they are all very similar in shape, size and decoration to those made in the same period by Caughley.

One, possibly the only, welcome result of this was the use of ROG class 47s on a few extra services between Birmningham Moor Street and London Marylebone.

This locomotive was one of those operated by the long defunct Cotswold Rail and I had quite a few shots of it taking loads to and from Long Marston.

Class 47s were the most numerous and versatile diesel locomotives on the UK railway system. There were few places they could not go and few duties they could not perform. Because of this, they were derided by most enthusiasts until it became clear that they were not long for this world, when, of course, they became the number one target and people travelled far and wide to photograph their final workings.

Fortuntately, I had always photographed them and once again didn’t feel the need to chase them around too much in the final months of their working lives. The summer of saw a Saturdays only On 9 July operated this service and is seen here just beyond Water Orton in the days when the M42 embankment was an excellent location for northbound workings. I think that the diesel worked only to Crewe from a where a steam locomotive took over for the remainder of the journey. I must have been quite a spectacle for anyone on the train as a large herd of friendly bullocks had arranged themselves in a semicircle behind me, luckily not straying into shot, although the accompanying flies were always in danger of making themselves known in the form of out-of-focus blobs in the sky and I did, in fact, have to clone out a couple of marks that presumably were insects I really hadn’t fancied yet another class 37 shot here especially with such an unexciting load but the freshly painted 47 was a much more attractive proposition.

It was close to the road bridge when I arrived and there was just had to line up this view of the locomotive which fitted nicely enough in a small gap, although I did have to stand in the middle of the road to achieve the correct angle!

This makes a lot of wines to taste and you better plan ahead with the fair’s website to make a choice. The problem is that their website [here the page for the next one in march which is a bit smaller] is not very user-friendly, you have to click repeatedly without ever having for example all the domaines of a given region on a single page, so I usually prefer to go there without planning. It seems to me that in the past they displayed a large board at the entry with the names of participants and the stands location in the fair, I saw none of this this time, but walking and picking randomly the wineries you’ll taste is interesting as well, especially that there is no region order, they’re all mixed up with a Champagne producer standing next top a Languedoc for example.

It had been a while that I hadn’t visited this fair in spite of receiving lots of invitations, sometimes because I’m out of town, sometimes because of the crushing crowds see pic on right , but I decided to visit again this december, first because there are a few natural-wine producers who participate, and because interesting vignerons pop up also year after year, who use the fair as a direct access to the Paris-region public. It had been a few years since last time I visited, although I receive many invitations from my past visits I used to give them around, they’re not nominative.

The good thing is, when you buy wine even once here, the domaines take note of your name and address and you receive every year from them an invitation for 2 people.
