The Abbot also sat as a peer in Parliament. The last abbot, John Reeve, was given a pension, and may have lived his remaining days in this house in Crown Street. During the time of the abbey any form of local self determination by the townspeople of Bury existed solely through the Candlemas Guild and later the Guildhall Feoffment Trust. The property of the Abbey of St Edmund was surrendered to the Crown on 4th November but much of the wealth had already been confiscated in the previous year. After the dissolution in , the rights of the Abbot returned to the Crown. The government of the town was largely ignored by the new owners of the abbey lands and privileges, and any joint actions continued to be carried out through the Guildhall Feoffees, largely without any formal legal backing.
There are a number of methods by which a rifle can be dated, or at least bracketed between certain years of manufacture. For the latter, dates of introduction of military arms can be located within the Government “List of Changes” LoCs as can dates of obsolescence and of modification or upgrade to later marks. You may not necessarily find specific date information within the text of particular pages, but often the images of advertisements or catalogue entries contain some dating ‘give-away’, such as the year in which a particular rifle achieved a notable competition score by someone, but which data is in graphic format and therefore not “searchable” by a text search engine.
Do not briefly glance over a page and assume that the information you require is not there.

Here is an image from an advertisement for the Anschutz 54 rifle in , which “ad” stated that these rifles were being imported into Britain as a result of their International and National competition successes. By , the now World famous Anschutz SuperMatch had been introduced. With the SuperMatch’s purpose designed three-positional Standing, Kneeling and prone equipment, there appeared a need for a purpose built prone rifle By the , the Model 64 had been introduced Shown below is a hand-built walnut and steel scale model of an Anschutz Model – of s vintage.
The rifle is barely 7″ long; and the. Below is an example of a late s Anschutz SuperMatch rifle, minus its rear-sight, and with the prone stock, used for the same round-actioned barrel, underneath for comparison. From these times, Anschutz never looked back, their rifles being frequently used to gain success at the highest levels of International competition. Century models led the way in non-wood “skeletonised” alloy stocks, now built by many competing manufacturers.
Wooden stocks are, however, not past their sell-by date. Many high achieving target shooters still prefer them, which has required manufacturers to continue production and development of the traditional rifle. Below are images of a British owned, customised, modern Anschutz. It has been fitted with walnut furniture, replacing the layer stained multi-coloured laminated furniture supplied with the rifle.
The walnut fore-end, pistol-grip and cheek-piece are each specially shaped to conform with the shooter. A multi-adjustable “Gemini” butt-plate has replaced the Anschutz original, and an extension tube is fitted to the barrel to extend the sight-radius for better fore-sight focussing.

The stages in how this community came about were gradual transformations: Agriculture and London have always been crucially important. Occasionally, ancient objects come out of the gravel pits.
In Cornwall there had been several tense years when the religious reformation was pressed home too harshly.
Middlesex , Sussex and Wessex during the Heptarchy. Originally recorded in AD , Essex occupied territory to the north of the River Thames , incorporating all of what later became Middlesex which probably included Surrey and most of what later became Hertfordshire. Its territory was later restricted to lands east of the River Lea. After the Norman conquest, Essex became a county. During the medieval period, much of the area was designated a Royal forest , including the entire county in a period to , when the area “north of the Stanestreet” was disafforested.
However, County Boroughs of West Ham — , Southend-on-Sea — and East Ham — formed part of the county but were unitary authorities not under county council control. Parish-level administration — changes A few Essex parishes have been transferred to other counties. Before , small areas were transferred to Hertfordshire near Bishops Stortford and Sawbridgeworth.
At the time of the main changes around , parts of Helions Bumpstead , Sturmer , Kedington and Ballingdon-with-Brundon were transferred to Suffolk ; and Great Chishill , Little Chishill and Heydon were transferred to Cambridgeshire. Later, part of Hadstock , part of Ashton and part of Chrishall were transferred to Cambridgeshire and part of Great Horkesley went to Suffolk ; and several other small parcels of land were transferred to all those counties.
Essex became part of the East of England Government Office Region in and was statistically counted as part of that region from , having previously been part of the South East England region. Two unitary authorities In , the boroughs of Southend-on-Sea and Thurrock were granted autonomy from the administrative county of Essex after successful requests to become unitary authorities numbered 13 and 14 on the map to the right.
Before , the council regularly met in London near Moorgate , which with significant parts of the county close to that point and the dominance of railway travel had been more convenient than any place in the county.

Leisure Colchester — or Camulodunum as it was then — was the first Roman capital of Britain and evidence of its past is still very much apparent throughout the town.
Part of the original Roman wall that surrounded Camulodunum can still be seen on Balkerne Hill, on the outskirts of the town centre, and two of only five Roman theatres in the country are located here. The largest of these is at Gosbecks Archaeological Park, to the west of town, which is also the site of a number of significant Iron Age finds. It was built on the foundations of a Roman temple and the Castle Museum showcases the history of the site, with exhibits from both periods of history, interactive displays and tours of the Roman vaults.
A private health club with gym, swimming pool and a variety of fitness classes is located 10 minutes walk from Avellana Place, while Colchester Leisure World on Cowdray Avenue offers a selection of clubs, exercise classes and sports pitches. Leisure World is also home to several swimming pools, the leisure pool especially being a favourite with children thanks to its flumes, slides and waves.

Badge The three wavy vertical lines represent the three principal rivers of the County, the Cam, the Nene and the Ouse, while the two straight lines represent the many man-made drains of the Fens. The arms of the earlier authorities did not include such vertical lines, but a diagonal wavy line appeared in the arms of the old Cambridgeshire CC and in the arms of Cambridgeshire and Isle of Ely CC , horizontal wavy lines were in the arms of the Isle of Ely CC and the arms of Huntingdonshire CC, and multiple horizontal straight lines were in the arms of the Soke of Peterborough CC.
In every case either the bend or bar or its background were blue, indicating the rivers of the fenland, though in the case of the Soke of Peterborough the bars were derived from the arms of the Cecil family. The border of the shield with fleurs-de-lys extending into it from the gold of the shield is reminiscent of the “double tressure flory counter flory”, which appeared in the former Cambridgeshire and Cambridgeshire and Isle of Ely arms, and which came from the Royal arms of Scotland.
This recalls the fact that in the twelfth and early thirteenth centuries the earldom of Huntingdon and Cambridge was held by successive kings of Scotland. The mural crown appeared in both the Cambridgeshire and Isle of Ely arms and in the Huntingdon and Peterborough arms, and before that in the arms of the Soke of Peterborough.
Share this article Share ‘Cassie’s Law’ was inspired by the campaigning of Ipswich mum Jackie McCord, whose daughter, Cassie, 16, was killed by a driver who could not see properly. The popular teenager was on her way to college in Colchester in when year-old Colin Horsfall’s car ploughed into her on the pavement. Cassie died from severe head injuries the next day and Horsfall died three months later, having never recovered from his injuries. But instead of stopping the pensioner carries on, forcing the frightened youth to quickly jump back, dodging the car by inches It later emerged the horror crash happened just three days after the pensioner had driven into trees when he missed the entrance to a petrol station.
Police discovered she could not read a car registration from 20 yards – the legal minimum. Officers advised him not to drive again after the first crash – while his details were sent to the DVLA – but shockingly they were not able to seize his licence, meaning he was not prevented from killing Cassie.
